Best of 2013 | Year in Review

I have never done one of these posts before. I’ve always wanted to, but I would always think about it too late and I just let it slip away.

2013 seems like a great year to start because it was such an exciting year.

Let’s dive in, shall we?

Some highlights:

// this was my 3rd wedding season, and by far the most exciting one ever
// we started out in Portland and finished out the year in Atlanta
// we switched from apartment living to house living
// successfully conceptualized, and completed my 1st stylized shoot & got it featured on Style Me Pretty
// visited Glacier National Park (and simultaneously fell in love with Montana)
// became an aunt (for the 2nd time)
// moved into my 1st studio

This year’s wedding season was full of adventures. We went back to Portland one, two, three times, shot a wedding in Montana, dived into the Atlanta wedding scene, and got to know so many awesome couples.

I remember walking in the rain on the beach with Petra & Tyler for their Cancun elopement…watching Britt & Ren tear it up on the dance floor…dancing with the Clemson Tiger at Daniel & Katherine’s wedding, seeing how happy Kathleen & Noel were on the wedding day…I remember dying from laughter at Jack’s brother’s best man speech…the marching band leading Caitlin & Alex and their guests to cocktail hour in Hood River…and so many other memories from all my clients. I could go on and on about all of you, but then no one would ever see the beautiful images I’m about to post  😉

It’s always fun to reflect on the year, both on the business and personally. This was a year full of growth and change, and so many new experiences, and lessons learned. I’ll go into more detail in January when I do my 2014 goals post!

Let’s just get to the fun part already…my FAVORITE IMAGES OF 2013!

Taryn + JR | Westside Provisions District Engagement

I was so thankful for warmer (and dry) weather for Taryn & JR’s engagement session. It had been cold and rainy all last week, but thankfully Friday proved differently.

They live a few blocks away from the Westside Provisions District, so it just seemed right that we walked around there for pictures. There are so many fun walls and angles to play with over there, so we had a good time.

It took all that I have in me to not walk away with a pint of Jeni’s ice cream. That’s real strength right there  😉

I can’t wait to shoot their fall wedding at Monday Night Brewing next year! Until then, enjoy a few of my favorites.

December Goals

I’ve got the blues. The post-vacation blues. Traps me every time.

So, let me just think about the future then instead of trying to get out of this funk. That’s healthy, right??

Business

1. Buy plane ticket for Field Trip

2. Finish 2013 edits

3. Move into studio & blog it

4. Look into some studio management options (Tave’…ShootQ…etc) – any suggestions??

5. Start some personal work. I’d love to take the next few slower months to focus on something that inspires me.

Personal

1. Plan a mini Cali adventure with Michael (I’m going to Santa Barbara at the end of Feb for Field Trip, and we’re gonna tie in a family visit/vacay in L.A.)

2. Exterior Christmas lights (this needs to happen…yesterday)

3. Xmas tree (again, this should have happened already)

4. Photo books. I’ve been meaning to do a few instagram books with some of our favorite iphone images, and also a few travel books…I need to just always print photos

5. Small, inexpensive upgrades to the house (DIY headboard, hang more photos, etc)

6. Finish 2 books. One of my November goals was to read a book…well, I made some small strides forward by picking 2 books, now I just need to read them. HA. Book #1: The Book Thief // Book #2: The War of Art

In regards to #5 under Business, I recently came across some old photos that I took while I attempted a 365 photo project back in 2011. I only made it to day 80 (oops), but I re-edited a few of my faves and thought it was fitting to share. I really enjoyed that project, incomplete as it was, and it really challenged me. I’d love to do something similar that forces me to be creative on a daily basis. Do any of you get stale? What do you do to get yourself out of it?

Meredith + John | Serenbe Engagement

Meredith is one of the many awesome people I feel lucky to have met since moving to Atlanta. She’s so sweet and gentle, yet spunky all at the same time. She’s one of the designers for Amy Osaba, and she’s also finishing up her photography degree – so yeah, she’s talented. We were able to work together on this wedding, and I’m looking forward to the next collab!

I didn’t meet John until their engagement shoot and he’s just as awesome. I love the way he makes Meredith laugh, because IMO, laughter is one of the most important components in a marriage. He’s an avid fisherman (his fishing buddy is is grandma!! I love it!), and he and Mere fish together frequently, so I love that we were able to incorporate their hobbies into the shoot.

We’ve had some crazy weather this fall: lots of rain, a few freezing days, and a few summery days. Thankfully, the three of us landed at Serenbe on one of those random summery days last week and it was sooooo beautiful. This is probably one of my favorite locations so far…I love all of the tall pines, and the tall grasses. I could go back 10 more times and still have new spots to work with.

I had a blast walking around with these two and can’t WAIT for their March wedding…it’s gonna be amazing. Enjoy a few of my favorites.
